ABB and Microsoft put electric cars on a cloud

Charging your electric car is about to get easier and smarter.

The electric vehicle (EV) market is growing rapidly. Yet worldwide there are currently just 106,000 public EV charging stations for more than 1 million EVs. As the industry powers up to meet demand, global revenue from EV charging services is projected to grow from $152.6 million last year to $2.9 billion by 2023, according to Navigant Research. This represents a huge opportunity for companies to capture that revenue through new products, improved scalability and reduced maintenance costs.

One company working to stay at the forefront of technological change in power and automation is ABB — by embracing the cloud.

Today, ABB and Microsoft announced the launch of a new electric vehicle (EV) fast-charging services platform. The platform combines ABB’s EV fast-charging stations with Microsoft Azure cloud-based services. The new platform will ensure stability, global scalability and advanced management features for ABB customers and more advanced charging stations for EV drivers.

With the rapid pace of innovation these days, platform performance and stability can be key differentiators. Microsoft believes that moving to the cloud offers not only the necessary performance and stability, but also the ability to scale — as big and as quickly as needed. This flexibility, combined with stability and security features, is a game-changer for the world’s automotive markets.

Looking forward, ABB can reap even more benefits from its move to the cloud: Its next EV iteration will include proactive maintenance and traffic prediction via machine learning and predictive analysis.

ABB and Microsoft will introduce the new EV charging services platform at eCarTec Oct. 20–22 in Munich.
