Overview

A new report from Microsoft Security expands on findings from recent randomized controlled trials1 (RCTs) on the impact of generative AI for security professionals. The trials showed a 7% increase in accuracy, a 22% improvement in speed, and 97% of users indicated they would use the AI tools again.

The report, titled "The AI-powered CISO: Turning Threat Intelligence into Results for the Modern Security Leader," outlines key benefits of generative AI assistants: enhancing threat intelligence insights, accelerating threat responses, and aiding strategic decision-making. These benefits are illustrated through three scenarios where a CISO interacts with an AI assistant.

  1. Piercing the fog: A retail CISO achieves faster insight into the threat environment
Elena, a CISO at a retail company, uses AI to assess her organization's security posture against specific threats like Point-of-Sale attacks.
  2. Minutes matter: A healthcare CISO streamlines the approach to an emerging threat
Eric, a healthcare CISO, demonstrates how AI helps him respond swiftly to a breach affecting an industry peer by providing detailed threat summaries and recommended actions.
  3. Eyes to the horizon: A critical infrastructure CISO prioritizes investments with greater insight and efficiency
Avery, a CISO at a critical infrastructure company, uses AI to prioritize investments and advocate for security measures by understanding trends and team performance metrics.

Additional insights from the report include results from a recent survey stating 85% of CISOs see AI as crucial for security,2 with 25% of threat intelligence analysts actively using AI tools to boost their workflows.3
