In today's digital landscape, user privacy is more important than ever. That’s why Microsoft is dedicated to ensuring that you have control over your data, so you can decide what data you share and when. In this article, we’ll discuss the various aspects of Copilot's privacy features, including how conversation history is managed, how to personalize your Copilot experience, and why AI model training matters for you, so that you can make informed decisions about your data and enjoy a more secure and personalized experience with Copilot.
Steer your Copilot conversation history
When it comes to preserving your conversation history with Copilot, you’re in the driver’s seat. By default, the conversations you have with Copilot are saved, and you can view and access past conversations. For example, if you’ve created a detailed trip itinerary with Copilot and accidentally close the window, you don’t need to worry; the conversation—and the plans you’ve made—will be saved. You can return to and reference that conversation by clicking the time machine icon from the Copilot home page. No matter if you want to go back and reference a brainstorming session or a list of gift ideas for a friend’s birthday, Copilot will save them so you can review them whenever you need.
But what if you don’t want to save your conversations with Copilot? You’re still behind the wheel. To delete an individual conversation, select the time machine icon from the Copilot home page to view your conversation history and delete individual conversations. To delete your entire conversation history, the steps vary depending on how you’ve signed in to Copilot.
If you are signed in with your Microsoft Account:
- Select your profile name (or Account) in the settings menu, then choose Privacy > Export or delete history.
- Or, in your Microsoft Privacy Dashboard, select Copilot and then choose Delete all activity history under the Copilot app activity history section.
If you want to delete chats from Copilot before 10/01/2024 (legacy experience), in your Microsoft Privacy Dashboard select Browsing and search, scroll down to the Copilot activity history section and select Clear all Copilot activity history and search history.
If you are signed in with an Apple ID:
- From the settings menu, select Account > Privacy > Clear my history. (Please note that if you have merged your Microsoft Account-based and Apple ID-based Copilot accounts, this option will delete all conversation history associated with either account.)
- If you want to completely delete your Apple ID-based Copilot account, from the settings menu, select Account > Privacy > Delete my account.

Personalize your Copilot interactions
If personalization is enabled for you, your recent Copilot conversations and Microsoft activities will be used to provide you a more tailored and relevant experience. Your Microsoft activities include your Bing search activities, MSN activities, and inferred interests.
You can change your personalization setting at any time by going to Settings > Account > Privacy > Personalization.
On Edge, you can turn off by clicking on ... from Copilot setting menu > Permissions and privacy > Personalization.
If you change your personalization consent from “yes” to “no,” we will stop providing a personalized Copilot experience. You can still view your past conversations; however, your future Copilot experience will no longer be personalized.
If you do not want us to personalize using a specific conversation from your conversation history, you can delete it individually by selecting the time machine icon from the Copilot home page to view your conversation history and delete individual conversations.

Model training
You’ve probably heard the term “model training” when talking about AI models. But what does the phrase actually mean?
Generative AI refers to a category of AI models that analyze data, find patterns and use these patterns to generate or create a new output, such as text, photo, video, code, data, and more. “Training” a generative AI model means providing it with information to help it learn to make predictions or decisions. Training is a broad concept that includes many different activities to help models provide more appropriate results.
These models use training data to learn general relationships in language, not to memorize specific conversations. They do not store or have access to the original training data. Instead, generative AI models are designed to generate new expressive works and content. We also take additional steps to prevent these models from inadvertently reproducing their training data, such as conducting testing and building filters that screen out previously published or used material.
How does Microsoft train our AI models?
Except for certain categories of users or users who have opted out, Microsoft uses data from Bing, MSN, Copilot, and interactions with ads on Microsoft for AI training. This includes anonymous search and news data, interactions with ads, and your voice and text conversations with Copilot. This data will be used to improve Copilot and our other products and services to create a better user experience for you and others.
By using real-world consumer data to help train our underlying generative AI models, we can improve Copilot and offer a more reliable and relevant experience. The more diversity in conversations our AI models are exposed to, the better they will understand and serve important regional languages, geographies, cultural references, and trending topics of interest to you and others.
What does this mean for you?
If you are logged into Copilot with a Microsoft Account or other third-party authentication, you can control whether your conversations are used for training the generative AI models used in Copilot. Opting out will exclude your past, present, and future conversations from being used for training these AI models, unless you choose to opt back in. If you opt out, that change will be reflected throughout our systems within 30 days.
If you are not logged into Copilot with a Microsoft Account or other third-party authentication, we do not train Copilot on your conversations.
You can control whether your conversations are used for model training at any time by selecting your profile name (or Account) in the settings menu, then selecting Privacy > Model training. This setting will not exclude your conversations from being used for other general product or system improvements nor from use for advertising, digital safety, security, and compliance purposes as outlined in the Microsoft Privacy Statement.
