On July 5th, 2024, Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA) hosted the MSRA Day as part of the Summer Institute in Computational Social Science (SICSS). This event, held at MSRA’s headquarters, featured a series of impactful presentations and discussions on the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and society. The day brought together some of the brightest minds in the field, including MSRA’s own Xing Xie, Fred Jiang, Xiaoyuan Yi, and Fangzhao Wu, alongside Legend Zhu from Microsoft Garage and Diyi Yang from Stanford University.
The discussions covered a wide array of topics, such as the ethical implications of AI, the practical challenges of AI in real-world applications, and the future of AI in social sciences. The event fostered dynamic interaction between the speakers and an engaged audience of researchers, graduate students, and young scholars, providing invaluable insights into the evolving role of AI in society. The speakers also highlighted the importance of aligning AI development with societal values and ethical standards, creating an inspiring atmosphere for future interdisciplinary collaborations.
MSRA Day was a key component of the 2024 Summer Institute in Computational Social Science (SICSS), a two-week event held from June 30 to July 12, 2024, in Beijing. The SICSS program was co-organized by Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA), the Psychometrics Center at the University of Cambridge, and Beijing Normal University, with the goal of bridging the gap between artificial intelligence and the social sciences. Participants explored cutting-edge topics such as large language models, social media analysis, network analysis, and psychometrics, engaging in rich, interdisciplinary discussions that drive innovation and development in both fields.
