Beyond Hospital Walls: Transforming Healthcare with In-Home Monitoring

The rise of chronic diseases and the growing demand for personalized treatments drive our exploration of continuous monitoring systems. Our wireless and wearable sensing technologies are designed to continuously track vital signs and body movement (with IRB approval), with the goal of giving healthcare providers a deeper and more accurate understanding of a patient’s condition. These valuable data can enable early detection and prevention, personalized, adaptive treatment plans, and improve patient engagement and quality of life—all while potentially reducing healthcare costs.
To achieve high accuracy and robustness, we are pursuing a hardware-software co-design approach. On the hardware side, we are developing advanced metasurfaces—engineered arrays of subwavelength cells designed to manipulate waves in ways conventional materials cannot—to dramatically enhance sensing resolution through careful tuning of geometry, material properties, and spatial arrangement. On the software side, we are building advanced machine learning algorithms to integrate multi-modality data. Meanwhile, to achieve ease of use, we are developing simple, user-friendly sensing approaches that can run on commodity devices, such as smartphones, smart speakers, smart watches, and earphones, which require minimal user intervention.
